Weingut um 1900

History

In 1640 the abbot and convent from the St. Nicolaus Abbey (situated at Brauweiles, Cologne) bought lands from two atizens (one of Johannisberg, the other of Winkel). It consisted out of vineyards -37500 qm-, fields, meadows and containet two adjacent houses. Hence, the current name of the estate.

This transaction was aknowledged, among others, by the Mainzer Prinse,  Anselm Casimir an 17/11/1640 under condition that a series of duties and costs to the community of Johannisberg were to be fulfilled. The instatement  of these conditions was again confirmed by the abbot from Braumweiler, Johannes Münch.

(Copies of this correspondense aut of the counser records of Johannisberg are in aur hands.)

Afer the abbey was secularized in 1803, the ownership was transferred to Nassau.

The next owner of the present estate is believed to be Georg Schamari. Afer his death his widow, Kunigunde sold the estate to Nicolaus and Maria Kempnich for the sum of 2705 gilders on 28/05/1860.

As with many wine estates (and us also) structured farming development became more repressed through the start of bottled wine marketing in the 1950`s

Today we manage 70000 qm vineyards according to the newest envirommental friendly methads.

Our vineyards are situated in the best locations of Johannisberg, Hattenheim, Geisenheim and Winkel. Many vineyards lie in the classified "First Growth Layer".

The vines consist of 80% Riesling, 17% blue Spätburgunder and 3% Müller-Thurgau grape varieties.

We have 30-40 different wines from several vintages to offer, from which 70% fall in the dry and half-dry category. Certain wines also undergo woodbarrel aging for 3-12 months in aur cellar.
